The key component of all HID ballast is the “controller” which controls all functions from the initial ignition to continually ensuring the xenon gas inside the bulb stays ignited. The quality of every ballast starts with the controller inside.

1. CPU Controller: All HID ballasts made in China or Taiwan use a CPU programming controller, the program is easy to copy, and the machine to create them can cost about $3,000 to buy, therefore any engineer could make a ballast in his living-room. With that, many are rapidly creating low quality ballasts and offering a very cheap price in order to earn more profit. A CPU controller cannot monitor the HID lamp (lamp power continually changes), and the lamp power does not properly correspond with the CPU program and ends up burning out the ballast. The defect rate is much higher and the ballast life is short with a CPU controlled ballast system.
2. ASIC Controller: HYLUX’s ballast uses an ASIC chip controller which is created without program inside, the same way HELLA & Matsushita manufacture their ballasts. ASIC chip is difficult to design and in turn comes with an expensive price tag.
